AUGUST

Golden Bell peppers, heriloom tomatoes

A few of the things we picked on August 11th. Clockwise from upper left: Golden Bell, bell peppers, Brandywine heirloom tomato, Black Russian heirloom tomatoes and Burpee Burpless cucumbers.

Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly

I believe that this is a Great Spangled Fritillary Butterfly. It is enjoying our Buddleia (Butterfly Bush). They are relatively common here in western Michigan.

Monarch butterfly caterpillar on parsley

The Milkweed plants did poorly this summer. Their tops succumbed to a disease of some sort and we didn't get blossoms. The monarch caterpillars seemed to prefer our Parsley to the sick Milkweed. We let them have an entire pot of parsley. A small sacrifice to encourage more Monarch butterflies. I understand that they also like Dill.

My nemesis in the string bean patch. The Japanese Beetle. We've been picking them off the vines every day this summer. Right now the males seem to be as interested in the female Japanese beetles as they are in the bean leaves.
